What Is Padel?

Padel is a racket sport played on an enclosed court approximately 25% smaller than a tennis court. It is played in doubles — two players on each side — and combines elements of tennis, squash, and racketball into something entirely its own.

The walls are in play. Unlike tennis, when the ball bounces off the glass or mesh walls at the back and sides, it can be played legally. This opens up extraordinary angles, defensive retrievals, and attacking plays that do not exist in any other sport.

The padel racket has no strings — it is a solid foam and fibreglass face, perforated with holes to reduce air resistance. It is smaller than a tennis racket and easier to handle, which is one reason padel is the fastest-growing sport in the world.

According to the International Padel Federation (FIP), padel is now played by over 25 million people in more than 148 countries.

How to Score in Padel

The Score

Padel uses identical scoring to tennis: 15 – 30 – 40 – Game. At deuce (40-40), you need two consecutive points to win.

Win six games (with a two-game lead) to win a set. At 6-6, a tiebreak is played. Most club matches are best of three sets.

Key Rules

The serve
Underarm, below waist. Diagonally into the service box. Ball must hit the back wall.
Walls in play
After the ball bounces on the floor, play it off any wall.
One bounce
Ball can only bounce once on the floor before you must strike it.
Beginner Technique

The Shots You Need First

Practice
Wall Play

What Equipment Do You Need?

Your First Racket

As a beginner, choose a round-shaped racket with a low balance point — this puts the sweetspot in the middle and maximises forgiveness on off-centre hits. Budget: £80–£150.

Avoid diamond-shaped rackets — those are for experienced attacking players. Wrong choice for a beginner.

Padel ballsSlightly less pressurised than tennis balls. Buy padel-specific.
Court shoesLateral support matters. Tennis clay court shoes work well.
Grip tapeCheap and important — keeps your grip secure during fast play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have played tennis to play padel?
No. While tennis players often pick up padel quickly, it is completely accessible to anyone. The smaller court, solid racket, and slower ball make it easier to learn than tennis for absolute beginners.
How long does a padel game last?
A recreational game typically lasts 60–90 minutes. Most clubs book courts in 90-minute slots. A professional match is typically 60–120 minutes.
Is padel a good workout?
Excellent. Short explosive bursts, lateral movement, constant reaction — highly cardiovascular. A typical hour burns 400–600 calories.
How do I find people to play with?
Most clubs run social sessions and beginner nights. This is the easiest way to meet players at your level. England Padel lists clubs with active social programmes.
Can I play padel with a tennis racket?
No. Padel uses a specific solid-faced racket with no strings. Using a tennis racket is not permitted — the court speed and wall dynamics require padel-specific equipment.
What shoes should I wear?
Padel-specific or clay court tennis shoes with lateral support. Avoid running shoes — padel demands sideways movement that running shoes do not support.
